I love my Tamron 17-50 f2.8. It's my standard lens on my D300. It focuses fast and accurately - no over / under focusing that others have had. The fact that it is f2.8 right though is fabulous and keeps my flash use to a minimum. I also get great close-ups (the macro is so good I rarely use my Nikkor 60mm Micro) and I can open it right up to get a tiny DoF. This means that I've been able to dump my 50mm f1.4 since the 2.8 is wide enough. I compared to the Nikon and was tempted to go native since all my other lenses (12-24; 70-300VR and 60mm Micro) are all Nikon. But this lens bowled me over with great crisp images, its light weight and low cost. Heck, the Nikon is not three times as good, but it is three times as expensive! My only real complaint is build quality - it's not bad, but it's not up to Nikon standards. But then again, it's one third the cost. Did I mention earlier that this Tamron is great value? Buy this fella and use the change to get a nice ultra wide like the Nikon 12-24 (my other favourite lens).

I feel really sorry for folks who have had the focussing issue - that's bad news. All I can say is that mine is fine and I love it so much it stays on all the time.
